Understanding the marker
CK is an enzyme found in muscle cells that leaks into the blood when muscles are strained or damaged. The value rises after hard training and with muscle injury.
CK can rise after physical activity, muscle injury or some medicines, with substantial variation between people. It is not a score of training readiness or recovery. Follow the ordered test's preparation instructions and discuss any changes to prescribed treatment with the treating clinician.
What does high CK (creatine kinase) mean?
A high CK needs assessment with symptoms, recent activity, injuries and medicines. Exercise can raise CK, but should not automatically be assumed to explain it. Marked elevations or significant symptoms need prompt medical assessment.
What does low CK (creatine kinase) mean?
A low CK result is often of limited significance on its own. Muscle mass and activity can affect the level, but it does not directly measure muscle strength or fitness.
