Understanding the marker
Thyroglobulin antibodies are immune-system proteins that react with thyroglobulin, a protein in the thyroid. They can help investigate an immune reaction involving the thyroid.
These antibodies answer a different question from thyroid hormone tests. Their presence does not show whether the thyroid makes too much or too little hormone. They can also affect measurement of thyroglobulin in specialist follow-up; the reason for testing determines the interpretation.
What does a positive Thyroglobulin antibodies result mean?
A positive result can support an immune reaction involving the thyroid. It does not show current hormone function, which is assessed with TSH and thyroid hormone measurements.
What does a negative Thyroglobulin antibodies result mean?
A negative antibody result does not exclude every immune-related thyroid condition. TSH, free T4 and symptoms remain relevant when thyroid function is being assessed.
