Understanding the marker
TRAb measures antibodies that bind to the receptor through which TSH signals the thyroid. It helps investigate some causes of thyroid overactivity.
The test is used with TSH, free T4 and symptoms when investigating thyroid function. It can help assess whether Graves disease, an immune-related cause of overactivity, fits the overall findings. The antibody result alone is not a complete diagnosis.
What does a positive TRAb result mean?
A positive result may support Graves disease when the hormone results and symptoms are consistent. The laboratory's reported interpretation and the wider assessment are needed.
What does a negative TRAb result mean?
A negative result makes Graves disease less likely but does not completely exclude it. Thyroid hormone results and symptoms still guide the assessment.
