Understanding the marker
The differential breaks white cells into their subtypes - neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils. Each type responds differently to different conditions.
A white cell differential contains separate results for several cell types, rather than one high or low value. The pattern may support investigation of infection, inflammation or blood disorders but does not determine the diagnosis.
What does high Differential mean?
Each named white-cell type has its own count and reference interval. Assess those results with the total white-cell count, symptoms and any medicines. There is no single high value for the whole differential.
What does low Differential mean?
Interpretation depends on which cell type is low and the rest of the panel.
