Fasting glucose shows your blood sugar after an overnight fast. It is one of the oldest and simplest ways to screen for diabetes.
The value is a snapshot of blood sugar and complements HbA1c. A single high value needs confirmation before diabetes is diagnosed.
What does low Glucose mean?
Low fasting glucose is uncommon and can appear with alcohol use, certain medications, or more rarely hormonal disease.
What does high Glucose mean?
Values 6.1-6.9 mmol/L are consistent with pre-diabetes; values of 7.0 and above on two occasions meet the criteria for diabetes.
