Understanding the marker
IL-6 is a messenger involved in the body's inflammatory response. It is measured for specific clinical questions and is not a measure of everyday stress.
IL-6 helps cells communicate during an immune response. A single measurement cannot confirm or exclude inflammation. Interpretation depends on symptoms, timing and the reason for testing. Biotin supplements can interfere with some methods, so tell the clinician about supplements and follow the assay's preparation instructions.
What does high IL-6 mean?
IL-6 can rise during different inflammatory responses. A high result does not identify a specific condition. CRP, symptoms, sampling time and the original clinical question help determine its significance.
What does low IL-6 mean?
A low IL-6 result means little was measured at that sampling time. It cannot exclude inflammation or replace assessment of symptoms.
