Understanding the marker

Phosphate works with calcium for bone health and is needed for energy metabolism. It is regulated by kidneys, parathyroid, and vitamin D.

Phosphate is interpreted with kidney function, calcium and, when indicated, parathyroid hormone and vitamin D. Testing is most useful for a selected clinical question; a serum concentration is not a general measure of dietary quality or energy.

What does high Phosphate mean?

Kidneys help regulate phosphate. A high result is therefore assessed with kidney function, calcium and other relevant tests, as well as any medicines or supplements.

What does low Phosphate mean?

A low phosphate result is assessed with dietary intake, absorption, medicines and related mineral results. The level and any symptoms determine the need for further assessment.
