What is Calcium?
for bones, muscles, and nerves
- Unit
- mmol/L

- Turnaround

Calcium is required for bones, muscle contraction, nerve function, and blood clotting. The value is tightly regulated by parathyroid glands, vitamin D, and kidneys.
The value is read alongside albumin because much calcium is protein-bound. With low albumin, an albumin-corrected calcium should be used.
What does low Calcium mean?
Low calcium can appear with vitamin D deficiency, kidney disease, or parathyroid disorders.
What does high Calcium mean?
High calcium should be investigated - common causes include primary hyperparathyroidism or, less often, malignancy.
