ApoB counts the number of atherogenic particles in the blood. It is often a better cardiovascular risk marker than LDL alone because it captures particle count, not just cholesterol content.
Every atherogenic particle - LDL, VLDL, IDL, and Lp(a) - carries one ApoB molecule. ApoB therefore directly reflects the number of particles able to penetrate the artery wall. When LDL and ApoB disagree, ApoB is the more reliable indicator.
What does low Apolipoprotein B mean?
Low ApoB is favourable.
What does high Apolipoprotein B mean?
High ApoB means raised cardiovascular risk. Values above 1.2 g/L should be investigated further.
