FSH stimulates the ovaries or testes to produce sex hormones and germ cells. The value is central to fertility and menopause assessment.
FSH rises at menopause as ovarian production drops. In men, high FSH can suggest testicular dysfunction. In fertility assessment the sample is usually drawn on cycle day 2 to 5.
What does low FSH mean?
Low FSH can suggest pituitary disease or hormone therapy.
What does high FSH mean?
High FSH in late reproductive years is consistent with perimenopause or menopause.
