Understanding the marker
Testosterone has roles in reproductive function, muscles and bones. The test measures total testosterone in the blood and is assessed with symptoms and related hormones.
Testosterone varies with sampling time, sleep, illness and hormone treatment. Follow the collection instructions for the ordered test. An unexpected result may need confirmation; SHBG and other hormone results help determine its meaning.
What does high Testosterone mean?
A high total testosterone result is assessed with SHBG, related hormones and any medicines or hormone treatment. The result alone does not establish a cause or a reproductive diagnosis.
What does low Testosterone mean?
A low total testosterone result is interpreted using the appropriate reference interval, symptoms, sampling time and SHBG. It does not establish hormone deficiency on its own or show whether treatment is needed.
