Understanding the marker
DHEA-S is made mainly by the adrenal glands, which sit above the kidneys. It can help assess the production of hormones related to testosterone.
It can supplement clinical assessment when there are signs of androgen excess. Levels change with age and can be affected by medicines. DHEA-S does not measure chronic stress or a balance against cortisol.
What does high DHEA-S mean?
A high DHEA-S result may reflect increased hormone production by the adrenal glands. The actual level, symptoms, medicines or supplements and related hormone tests guide further assessment.
What does low DHEA-S mean?
DHEA-S commonly falls with age. A low result is assessed with the age-appropriate interval, any medicines, symptoms and the reason for testing; it does not establish a hormone deficiency on its own.
